Purpose & Strategic Importance

Every National Society faces risks at all levels. The better these risks are understood and openly discussed, the more effectively the organisation can take action to avoid them where possible or mitigate their impact if they occur.

Principles

  • Strengthens the Society’s ability to anticipate challenges before they escalate.
  • Builds a culture where risks are acknowledged, not hidden, making solutions easier to find.
  • Supports resilience by preparing the organisation to adapt when things go wrong.

Activities & Decisions

  • Encourage open conversations about risks in governance, management, branches, and operations.
  • Integrate risk management into planning processes, alongside objectives and budgets.
  • Use tools like a risk register to track potential threats and assign responsibilities for mitigation.
  • By modelling a culture of risk management, leaders create a safer, more resilient environment — where risks are not ignored, but managed as part of strategic thinking and planning.
